Tariff Hike: MTN Increases 15GB Internet Plan To N6000

The First leading telecommunication provider, MTN has started increasing its data tariffs significantly.

The development follows the recent approval by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), for telecom operators to increase their tariffs by up to 50 percent. The move was justified as necessary to help sustain service quality amid rising operational costs in the sector.

Quick Recall on NCC Decision

Reuben Mouka, the commission’s spokesperson, announced the decision in January, explaining that the approval aligns with the NCC’s regulatory powers under Section 108 of the Nigerian Communications Act, 2003.

According to Mouka, the adjustment allows a maximum increase of 50 per cent on current tariffs, a compromise from the over 100 per cent hike initially requested by some network operators.

“The adjustment, capped at a maximum of 50 percent of current tariffs, though lower than the over 100 per cent requested by some network operators, was arrived at taking into account ongoing industry reforms that will positively influence sustainability,” Mouka stated.

New Pricing

Under the new MTN pricing, internet subscribers will now have to pay N6,000 for a 15GB weekly data plan, from the previous N2,000 that was being charged. This marks a 200 percent price jump, significantly impacting customers who rely on the network for internet access.

MTN has also confirmed the tariff hike in a response shared on its X (formerly Twitter).

The company wrote: “Y’ello! Thanks for stopping by, We apologise for any inconvenience and delayed Response. A price increase has been implemented to enhance our services and serve you better, which is why you are seeing the updated amount.”

The price adjustment has sparked widespread reactions on social media, with many Nigerians criticizing the increase, especially at a time when they are still struggling with the economic fallout from the removal of fuel subsidies in 2023.

Many have expressed concerns that the rising cost of data will further strain household budgets and make internet access less affordable.

While MTN and other telecom operators argue that the tariff hike is necessary to maintain infrastructure and improve service delivery, Nigerians continue to lament the rising cost of living and its impact on daily life.
